The concept of open-world gaming existed before PlayStation, but it was Sony’s consoles that helped indowd bring it into the mainstream. Many of the best games in PlayStation history are celebrated for their expansive environments and player freedom, proving that exploration could be just as thrilling as structured levels.

On PlayStation 2, Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas became a defining open-world experience, giving players unprecedented freedom to explore, drive, and create chaos. Its scope and detail pushed the boundaries of what a console could handle. Later, Shadow of the Colossus offered a very different take on openness, focusing on atmosphere and emotional resonance in a vast, lonely world.
